Castello di Vicarello

Centuries old, sensitively restored, and unlike anywhere else in Tuscany, Castello di Vicarello is a historic cluster of stone and brick buildings arranged on a verdant hilltop above its own vineyards — a place shaped by years of thoughtful, deeply personal curation rather than any decorator's brief. The owners' long years in Indonesia have left a quietly beautiful oriental thread running through interiors that blend antiques, contemporary pieces, and the kind of accumulated character that cannot be bought or hurried.
Seven guest suites accommodate up to 14 guests across the castle's two distinct worlds. Four suites overlook the ancient flagstone courtyard at the heart of the main house, while three more occupy garden outbuildings surrounded by white roses, lavender, and ancient olive trees. Both settings are lovely in entirely different ways. Two swimming pools serve the estate — an infinity pool beneath the spa house, which is designed to evoke the luxury camp tents of an African safari, facing out over the vineyards; and a second pool tucked among the olive trees for cooler, greener afternoons.
At the heart of every stay are the two kitchens and their resident cooks, whose homemade meals reflect the deep larder of the Maremma with honesty and skill. The owner — who has published her own collection of Tuscan recipes — offers cooking classes for guests who want to bring something of Vicarello home with them. It is that kind of place: generous, inhabited, and genuinely unforgettable.
